Study Programmes at the Faculty of Health Sciences and their objectives

General Nursing

  • a full-time or part-time study programme

It represents the first level of university education and its aim is to prepare general nurses for their profession of a nurse. The graduates are ready to carry the responsibility and make competent decisions in providing nursing care according to the nursing process method at various levels of the health care system. They are qualified to cooperate in dealing with current issues of nursing in state or private facilities, in professional organizations etc. in the Czech Republic.

Midwifery

  • a full-time or part-time study programme

The objective of this study programme is to gain a comprehensive theoretical and practical qualification for the profession of a midwife. The graduates carry responsibility in taking care of a woman with physiological pregnancy and delivery, of a physiological newborn and they participate in the care of a woman with abnormalities and pathologies in pregnancy and delivery. They are deeply acquainted with the spheres of midwifery, obstetrics, gynaecology and neonatology.
The graduates are ready to carry responsibility in taking care of mother and the child and are able to work independently in primary, community, out-patients´ and in-patients’ spheres.

Radiology Assistant

  • a full-time or part-time study programme

The study programme is aimed at comprehensive educational preparation of radiology assistants as health care professionals using radiological imaging and irradiation technologies for a number of techniques of diagnostic and non-diagnostic imaging and medical application of ionizing radiation. The graduates are independent professionals in using ionizing radiation, nuclear magnetic resonance imaging or ultrasound for diagnostic imaging or treatment, i.e. in state or non-state health facilities, in veterinary facilities and research laboratories as well as in practical instruction.

Physiotherapy

  • a full-time study programme

The bachelor degree study programme is aimed at the profile of a physiotherapist for rehabilitation practice in physiotherapy in all phases of the treatment process including primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. The graduates are able to work in all types of health facilities in which some kind of rehabilitation or physical medicine takes place. They cooperate with specialists in functional diagnostics and (rehabilitation) therapy in patients with acute, subacute and chronic phases of health disorders in which rehabilitation is an effective kind of care. They take part in examinations of basic motor functions in the most common pathological categories including assessment of individual level of self-service and other psychomotor, eventually, sensory and social motor functions. They participate in assessing the overall strategy and possible limits of rehabilitation and a short-term rehabilitation plan for patients. They carry out standard levels of common methodology in motor re-education and physical therapy; eventually they coordinate with technical-prosthetic specialists in dealing with abnormal or lost function in patients by combination of functional re-education with application of technical, prosthetic or other orthotic compensatory aids or replacements.

Long-term Nursing Care of Adults

  • a full-time follow up master degree study programme

The study programme respects the current situation in the transforming health care. It is meant to be a pre-specializing education providing selected specialized knowledge and skills to bachelors of nursing in the sphere of nursing care of long-term and terminally ill patients. The graduates are competent in community care, in hospitals and other types of inpatient as well as outpatient care of long-term ill adult patients and newly also in the field of specialized education and science. They are prepared for individual administration of direct nursing care, health care education and nursing management (the field of organization and management of nursing services and care).

Physiotherapy

  • a full-time follow up master degree study programme

The study programme is aimed at the advancement of professional qualification of workers in physiotherapy with reference to the needs of individual branches of clinical medicine. Particularly it deals with systematic rehabilitation of serious diseases and injuries in which the timely and targeted physiotherapy distinctively prevents the risks of permanent functional losses and secondary disability. This specialization in human motor system and its disorders distinguishes clinical specialists from universal physiotherapists in recovery of functional, especially motor abilities. The basic strategy of instruction is to motivate students to develop further in the field of physiotherapy, to research and standardise so far predominantly empiric therapeutic procedures in rehabilitation, to solve current issues in rehabilitation, physiotherapy and in manifestations of movement functions in general with respect to evidence-based medicine principles.

Health Care Management

  • a part-time follow up master degree study programme

The study programme is a purpose-built combination of health care, economic and other social sciences. Its aim is to gain useful knowledge of managerial type which specifies the graduates for independent and creative activity at managerial and administrative posts in health care and related institutions. It is designed for applicants with prior education in nursing and other non-medical fields obtained in bachelor degree study programmes at medical and medico-social faculties or, eventually, other faculties of health care specialization. It is a follow up study programme that does not recognize the qualification to perform medical profession according to Act No.95 and 96/2004 Coll. regarding the conditions for receiving and recognition of qualifications to perform medical and non-medical professions.

Medical Laboratory Technician

It is a professional training of medical laboratory technicians that are health care specialists in laboratories of state or private health care facilities, in laboratories of research departments at universities and research institutions, health care institutions and pharmaceutical companies. It is a scientific study programme aimed at laboratory methods in categories such as molecular biology, cytology, histology, medical genetics, clinical biochemistry, microbiology or immunology.
The graduates of the bachelor degree study programme will become independent professionals wherever proper manipulation with biological material, knowledge of examination and diagnostic methods in health care specializations, handling laboratory instruments and equipment and work organization and management in laboratory is required.

Postgraduate Doctoral Study Programme in Nursing

  • full-time or part-time study programme

The Postgraduate Doctoral Study Programme in Nursing is aimed at nursing science and its methodology, scientific research and independent creative activity in the field of nursing. It prepares the graduates to apply the nursing diagnostic approach, verification and validation of classification systems in nursing. It leads them to study components of the nursing systems, organization structures, the objective, function and role of the subjects and strategies of change and to use Evidence Based Practice in nursing. It supports their ability to lead scientific and publication activity at both national and international levels. The study is concluded with a state doctoral examination and the defence of a doctoral thesis that proves their ability and readiness for independent activity in the area of research or advancement. Graduates are awarded the degree of a “doctor” (abbreviated as Ph.D., written after the name).

The Faculty of Health Sciences cooperates in publishing of the reviewed non-impact periodical called “Profession on-line” ranking in the Czech VaV database (VaV stands for Research and Development). It cooperates with a number of foreign universities of similar specialization, and offers abroad study stays and cooperation both in scientific and pedagogical activities.
